Representation matters. Period. All children should be regularly exposed to characters and real-life individuals who look like them and who like different from themselves. It is so important to the growth of our society to begin this journey in grade school. No one should be shocked to see a lesbian scientist, differently-abled artist, Black ballerina, or neurodiverse entrepreneur as an adult. One way teachers and parents can begin this journey is through literature discussions.
