Surveys and Assessments

Assessing the nature of the current relationships within the school climate is an integral first step in developing lasting relationships between teachers and families. Students need to feel safe and trust that their teachers genuinely care about their well-being. Parents and teachers should know and understand what their role within academia pertains to and the expectations of what the other party requires of them. Teachers need training on boundaries and cultural nuances within the family dynamic to better understand the lives and backgrounds of what families can bring to the table.

The FITNESSGRAM assessment tool is beneficial to schools that want to assess the health and physical fitness of their students. When used regularly this tool can assist in encouraging parent and community involvement.

A study by Kahan & McKenzie (2017) specifically looked at fifth graders from over 160 locations across multiple states in the U.S. One commonality was that students with low SES had low physical activity and high obesity. Students with high academic success also scored high in physical fitness. There was a distinct correlation between neighborhood crime and physical activity. If there was high crime, then there was low physical activity. This study concluded the school success in changing student behavior was determined by family and community engagement.

According to a qualitative study by Knopf and Swick (2007) there are three questions that should be asked in order to assess how successful family involvement is in a school, "(1) Is the pathway accessible to parents; can they participate easily or is the process cumbersome and restrictive? (2) Is there a viable set of supports that help and encourage parents to use the different venues for involvement? (3) Are there several ways for families to get involved and use their talents and strengths? As we use these guidelines in shaping our family involvement efforts we will find viable and helpful ways to develop meaningful parent-teacher and family-school relations."

This mixed methods study involves a Cocaring Relationship Questionnaire which discovers how each party in a parent-teacher relationship views their role, their participation in the relationship, and their view of the other party’s participation and role in the relationship. This survey was presented at a childcare facility for parents of 1-3 year olds. The demographics were analyzed as quantitative data while surveys provided the researchers with qualitative data.

*When you click on the title of this section you will see an example of a preliminary co-parenting questionnaire that can be modified as a cocaring relationship survey.

The Cocaring Behavior Coding Manual is in the Appendix A of this thesis from pages 30-38.
